Paul Lee Mata Villarreal, security officer at Floresville High School, received the Community of Character Award for his quick response during an emergency situation.
The afternoon of October 17, 2024, the Transportation Department received a call for immediate assistance concerning a school bus that had departed the middle school campus. A student was choking on a piece of apple and in urgent need of help. The bus attendant and driver promptly assessed the situation and requested the assistance of Mr. Villarreal, who was in close proximity.
Mr. Villarreal quickly boarded the bus and administered abdominal thrusts, commonly known as the Heimlich maneuver, until the piece of apple was successfully dislodged from the student’s throat. His prompt intervention was crucial in rendering the necessary aid to save the student's life.
Mr. Villarreal's exemplary actions not only preserved a young life but also highlighted his commitment to the students, staff, the district, and the broader community. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Villarreal for his decisive and timely response in a critical moment.
